Entrepreneurs, we’re different. We think different, act different, heck I’d say we might even smell a little different. Anyone can stray from the beaten path and create a new one, yet only a small percentage of us do.
So what does it take? Passion? Confidence? A certain level of charm and charisma? A mission to be unemployable so you can employ your own ideas? Eh. Yes and no. Sure it takes guts but in a world where you now have to have more than just a good idea, it takes a certain level of self-awareness.
I mean passion is cool but does passion get you up at three am to get some market research done before the rest of your household wakes up? Does passion give you the courage to open up a credit card just to max it out right away so you can afford a business coach? Does passion keep you going when your friends and family tell you those four little words? You can do this. Get a real job. For some, maybe. For most, no.
Take it from an entrepreneur who has been around the block a few times. I’ve had my fair share of failed businesses and launches that didn’t go so well. I’ve coached countless clients who had a hard time keeping the motivation up because they “didn’t think it would be so hard.” One thing that I am certain of is that passion means nothing if you aren’t self-aware. They don’t teach you this stuff in school.
From a young age we are told that we can do anything. As we get a little older we start to think we can’t. So we don’t. We get stuck in this cycle of doing things that leaves us feeling a little empty on the inside, yet some of us never question why. When you’re self-aware all of a sudden the lights turn on, all of them and living on auto pilot is no longer an option. We become so in tune with our feelings, now we’re not just questioning why the sky is blue but asking ourselves, how does a blue sky make me feel? What can I do about it?
We look internal instead of external for answers and the blame game doesn’t exist because we know we are in full control. We don’t just wish for it we make it happen. We believe in ourselves no matter what the rest of the world thinks and we break through that invisible glass everyone else stays under.
“Every time you state what you want or believe, you’re the first to hear it. It’s a message to both you and others about what you think is possible. Don’t put a ceiling on yourself.”
– Oprah Winfrey
I have been studying entrepreneurs and their habits for many years. I’ve noticed that they all have one thing in common. They did the inner work. In times of doubt, fear and uncertainty. They became their best resource. That’s my message to you today, do the inner work, become your best resource and break through that ceiling. Know that what you have to offer is extremely valuable even if it takes the world a little while to know what you’re up to and see the value in that. You have to break through while you’re waiting for the breakthrough.
